Financial Exploitation Prevention
Senior financial abuse, which has been called the “Crime of the 21st Century,” is increasing as our senior population increases. The accumulated wealth of older adults makes them targets for financial abuse, yet seniors at all income levels are being targeted. Older adults are at risk for financial abuse from family members, business and service professionals, acquaintances, and complete strangers.
Financial abuse often occurs at the same time as other forms of abuse, such as neglect and emotional/psychological abuse. The effects of financial exploitation are staggering: no savings, stress, shame, mental and physical illness and even death.
How We Help
• Pro Seniors provides legal assistance and representation to older adults who are victims of financial exploitation. • Financial services professionals and others who are mandated by the state of Ohio to report suspected financial exploitation and other forms of mistreatment are our allies in preventing and responding to fraud, exploitation and scams that threaten the financial security and well-being of older Ohioans.
• By equipping seniors with strategies to avoid further financial loss, Pro Seniors helps older adults and their advocates to recognize their strengths to overcome the experience and empower others to recognize the sophisticated tactics of scammers.
• By connecting older members of our community with sound resources to avoid isolation, empowering them to tell their story, and avoiding blaming and shaming, Pro Seniors seeks to prevent repeated exploitation, scams and theft.
